WB4RL-10 APRS

πŸ“‘WB4RL-10 Morgan County, Alabama APRS IGate – Digipeater

Work is nearing completion for the new Morgan County, Alabama APRS iGateDigi system. The system will allow us to extend our range to I65 and the east side of Hartselle. This is needed to offer I65 travellers iGate and Digipeater access to stations east and into Huntsville which currently has a gap in communications. If you are an APRS radio user you now have access to local, national and international APRS systems. We wish to thank the APRS.fi, website operators,The Modernman Youtube channel and everyone who has assisted us in the build, layout and software config. Work and planning began in October as the gear, training and install all slowly came into place. The project completion deadline set for the first week in March is on track to be completed ahead of schedule. Look for us on your APRS map and at aprs.fi. Finishing in March was set due to March marking the 1 year anniversary of the WB4RL 70cm repeater launch at 443.8250 PL 100.

πŸ“‘WB4RL-10 Morgan County, Alabama APRS IGate – Digipeater – Now Live via T-Mobile 5G

We are excited to announce the launch of WB4RL-10, new T-Mobile 5G Internet connection.

This new gateway enhances our local and regional emergency communications capabilities by providing a more secure and reliable connection, now fed directly through the T-Mobile 5G network.

Last nights storm event digipeating was carried out by connecting a cellphone hotspot feed to stay on line and handle traffic around the valley as Spectrum Internet failed and was offline. This shows how unreliable hardline Internet can be when we need it most. The new T-Mobile 5G system cures this issue and we look forward to dedicated satellite feeds.

πŸš—πŸš Traveling outside the coverage area?

When traveling outside the local coverage area, the WB4RL-10 iGateDigi keeps you in touch by providing interstate coverage. You’re never far from home with messaging, tracking and text available. You can connect with smsgte.org and send SMS messages to family and friends cellphones as well as tracking through APRS.FI website. These connections allow you to stay in contact with friends, nets, and home-area communications from anywhere you have internet access, extending the reach of the WB4RL-10 system well beyond its RF coverage.

πŸš€ WB4RL-10 iGate/Digi System Upgrade – Now Live!

The WB4RL-10 iGateDigi APRS System is now online with expanded coverage, and enhanced capabilities for our local APRS community!

This upgraded system improves APRS digipeating reliability, expands mobile and handheld coverage, and strengthens RF-to-Internet connectivity across the region.

πŸ”§ What’s New:
  • Increased reach for I65 travellers
  • Improved receive sensitivity
  • Enhanced APRS digipeating performance
  • Full-time iGate operation (RF ↔ APRS-IS)
  • Better support for mobile, weather, telemetry, and emergency operations

Whether you’re tracking mobile stations, operating during events, or experimenting with APRS messaging and telemetry, the new WB4RL-10 system is here to serve area hams with stronger, more reliable coverage.

πŸ“ Get on the air and try it out!

πŸ“‘ Beacon via WIDE1-1, WIDE2-1 and watch your packets propagate.

Stay tuned for coverage maps and system stats!

🌐 WB4RL-10 iGate/Digi APRS System – Expanded Coverage and Enhanced Capability

We are excited to announce that the WB4RL-10 iGateDigi APRS System has been upgraded and is now operating with increased range, improved receive performance, and expanded regional reach.

This enhancement strengthens APRS infrastructure for operators throughout our coverage area and provides improved support for mobile, fixed, and event-based APRS operations.

πŸ“‘ What Is APRS?

The Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) is a digital communications system used by amateur radio operators to transmit real-time information over RF. APRS supports:

  • GPS position reporting
  • Short text messaging
  • Weather station data
  • Telemetry
  • Event coordination
  • Emergency communications

Packets are transmitted over VHF (typically 144.390 MHz in North America) and are repeated by digipeaters or forwarded to the internet through iGates.

πŸ” What Is a Digipeater?

A digipeater (digital repeater) listens for APRS packets and retransmits them, extending their range beyond line-of-sight limitations.

The WB4RL-10 system now provides:

  • Improved packet decode sensitivity
  • Better retransmit signal
  • Optimized WIDEn-N path handling
  • Better support for fill-in and wide-area coverage

This allows mobile and handheld stations to reliably access the APRS network across a wider footprint.

🌐 What Is an iGate?

An iGate connects RF-based APRS traffic to the global internet-based APRS network known as APRS-IS.

The WB4RL-10 iGate performs two key functions:

RF β†’ Internet
  • Receives local RF packets
  • Injects them into APRS-IS
  • Allows global visibility via websites and apps
Internet β†’ RF
  • Delivers APRS messages from the internet back to local RF users
  • Enables messaging to mobile stations
  • Supports two-way APRS communication

This ensures local operators are fully integrated into the worldwide APRS network.

πŸ”§ What’s New With WB4RL-10?

The upgraded system now features:

πŸ“Ά Access to I65 and filling the gap between travellers and the Hunstville area

Expanded geographic coverage for stronger and more reliable packet delivery.

🎧 Improved Receive Performance

Enhanced decoding improves weak-signal packet reception from mobiles and handhelds.

πŸ”„ Smarter Digipeating

Better handling of standard paths such as:

  • WIDE1-1
  • WIDE2-1

This improves network efficiency while maximizing effective coverage.

🌎 Full-Time iGate Operation

Continuous RF-to-Internet and Internet-to-RF connectivity for seamless APRS messaging and tracking.

πŸš‘ Enhanced Support for Events & Emergency Operations

Improved reliability for:

  • Public service events
  • Severe weather spotting
  • Search and rescue coordination
  • EmComm deployments
πŸ“ How Local Hams Benefit

With the upgraded WB4RL-10 system, area operators can expect:

  • Better mobile coverage in fringe areas
  • Improved handheld APRS performance
  • More reliable APRS messaging
  • Increased visibility on APRS tracking platforms
  • Stronger network resilience during events

If you operate APRS in the area, simply beacon using recommended paths (typically WIDE1-1, WIDE2-1) and start enjoying the expanded infrastructure.

πŸ“‘ Join the Network

The WB4RL-10 iGate/Digipeater upgrade represents a continued commitment to strengthening regional APRS infrastructure and supporting the amateur radio community.

Get on the air, beacon responsibly, and take advantage of the expanded capability now available.73,
